Your focus
Confidence in tennis is pattern-specific: players feel confident when they know what shot they are about to hit and trust their ability to execute it. Identifying and owning a signature pattern gives the player a go-to option under pressure. Drilling it from match-score scenarios ensures the pattern holds when stakes are highest.
Before the session, coach and player agree on the player's strongest pattern (e.g., crosscourt forehand into backhand corner, then inside-in).
Coach sets up live points beginning at 30-30; the player must try to initiate their signature pattern on every first-strike opportunity.
Coach tracks how often the pattern was successfully initiated versus abandoned, and the win percentage when the pattern was used.
Debrief: increase the score pressure to 40-30 and 30-40 scenarios; player articulates why they trust the pattern and when they choose to deviate.
Goal
Success is executing your best pattern under match-point pressure with the same clean swing you have in warm-up, the situation doesn't shrink your game.
