How it works

Build early confidence by celebrating successful shots in a scaled-down court environment where success is frequent.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court
  • cones

Your focus

Young players gain confidence through repeated successful experiences, not through correction. The mini-court format increases the number of shots that land in, giving players many moments of success to celebrate. Verbal celebration of winners reinforces the positive identity of being a capable player.

1

Set up a mini-court using cones to define a service-box-sized playing area on each side of the net.

2

Coach hand-feeds balls to the player; player hits groundstrokes aiming to land in the mini-court.

3

Every time the ball lands in, the player raises their fist, says 'Yes!', and the coach echoes the celebration.

4

Count total winners in two minutes; next session, the player tries to beat their personal best, building a success ladder.

Helpful cues

  • You made it in, YES!
  • Own your winner!
  • Remember this feeling for the next shot.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use foam balls and allow the ball to bounce twice before the player hits, giving more time to prepare.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Expand the target to a full service box and require the player to call the target zone (left or right half) before each shot.
