How it works

Build the confidence to execute a high-percentage, high-intent serve consistently under simulated match-pressure scenarios.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court
  • targets (cones)

Your focus

Advanced players often push second serves to avoid double faults, which telegraphs weakness and invites the opponent to attack. Drilling serves at simulated match point forces the player to commit to shape and placement rather than just getting the ball in. The repetition of successful serves under pressure builds the memory of having done it before.

1

Player serves from deuce and ad court with a specific target called (e.g., T, body, wide) for both first and second serves.

2

Score context: coach announces the score before each pair of serves, always a pressure score such as 30-40, second set (must hold).

3

Player completes 10 service games (deuce + ad); any double fault resets that game's score to love-40, extending pressure.

4

Session goal: hold eight of ten games; debrief on serve location data and identify where confidence broke down and why.

Goal

You've got it when you step up to serve a big point with a clear target in mind and actually hit it, not aiming vaguely, but picking a spot and going for it.

Helpful cues

  • Commit to the target, no flinching!
  • Your second serve is a weapon, not a prayer.
  • Same routine, same confidence, every serve.

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the score pressure and simply track called-target accuracy across 20 serves each side.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a live returner who is instructed to attack every serve that lands near the middle of the box.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
