How it works

Build doubles teamwork by playing a rotating team format where partners must verbally agree on a strategy before each point.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Requiring pre-point strategy discussions forces partners to communicate deliberately rather than defaulting to individual instincts. The rotating format means players partner with multiple teammates, developing flexible communication skills rather than habits tied to one specific partner. Verbalizing strategy also improves individual tactical understanding even when playing singles.

1

Four players rotate in team format: pairs play three points, then the losing player rotates to the other side and gains a new partner.

2

Before every point, both partners must verbally agree on one tactical intention ('serve and volley,' 'stay back,' 'net player poaches').

3

After each long-range rotation, coach asks each player what their team's strategy was, no strategy recall = minus one point for that team.

4

The player with the most points after six rotations wins the session.

Helpful cues

  • Strategy agreed is strategy remembered, say it out loud
  • New partner, new conversation, don't assume they think like your last partner
  • Team tennis means the plan matters more than your individual shot

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow teams to choose from only two pre-set strategies ('both stay back' or 'one up one back') to simplify the decision.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require teams to adjust their strategy after every point based on what the opponents revealed, with the discussion completed in five seconds or less.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
