How it works

Improve coach-player communication by practicing a structured between-game debrief protocol where the player leads the analysis and the coach responds.

What you need

  • tennis racket
  • tennis balls
  • court

Your focus

Players who can articulate what they are experiencing during a match give coaches the information needed to make effective tactical adjustments. Reversing the debrief flow , player speaks first , builds self-awareness and reduces dependency on coach analysis. This communication skill also prepares players for tournaments where coaching time is limited and the player must be their own strategist.

1

Players play a competitive game (first to 4 points); coach observes silently.

2

After the game, the player has 30 seconds to explain: what went well, what went wrong, and what they want to change.

3

Coach responds only after the player has finished, adding or adjusting one element of the player's analysis.

4

Repeat for four games; at the end, coach evaluates the quality of the player's self-analysis on a 1-5 rubric.

Helpful cues

  • Be specific, 'I missed my backhand' is less useful than 'I was late on every backhand down the line'
  • Your analysis is information for both of us, don't guess, tell me what you actually felt
  • Good communication saves time and wins more games

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Give the player a structured template (three sentence starters) to use during their 30-second debrief.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Require the player to also predict what the coach will say before the coach speaks, then compare the two analyses.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
