Your focus
In junior tournament play, players may receive coaching between games, and practicing this interaction removes awkwardness and builds effective communication habits. Players who can quickly absorb and implement a tactical adjustment gain a significant competitive advantage. The drill creates accountability because the coach can directly observe whether the feedback was applied in the following game.
Two players play a competitive practice game (first to 4 points); coach observes without comment.
At the end of the game, coach gives one specific tactical instruction to one player (e.g., 'serve to the backhand this next game').
Player repeats the instruction back verbatim before the next game begins.
After the next game, coach asks player whether they implemented the instruction, how many times, and what the result was, creating a feedback loop.
Helpful cues
- Repeat it back so we both know you have it
- One instruction, fully applied, beats five instructions half-applied
- Show me you heard me by doing it, not by nodding
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce to one tactical concept per entire session (not per game) so the player can focus on a single change over a longer period.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Coach gives one tactical and one technical instruction between games and requires the player to implement both and self-report which was harder to apply. No account needed
