How it works
Mirror a leader's off-ball movement patterns to learn the concept of moving with and without the ball.
What you need
- soccer ball
Your focus
Young players naturally chase the ball. Shadow running drills redirect their attention to movement patterns , teaching them that positioning and running without the ball is as important as what happens with it.
In pairs, one player is the leader and one is the shadow.
Leader moves freely in a 15x15 yard area, forward, back, diagonal, checking away.
Shadow mirrors the exact movement, staying 2 yards behind.
Neither player has a ball, it's pure movement practice.
Switch roles after 60 seconds.
Progress: leader now has a ball and checks to receive from a passer while shadow learns the movement.
Goal
You've got it when you mirror every movement change instantly, no delay, no catching up. Your shadow should look like a reflection.
Helpful cues
- Watch the leader's hips, they tell you the direction first
- Quick feet when changing direction
- Off-ball movement is about being in the right place before the ball comes
