Your focus
Diagonal off-ball runs are among the most effective ways to beat defensive lines in soccer. Teaching the timing and angle of these runs early develops the movement intelligence that turns simple passes into goal-scoring opportunities.
A player starts at the top of the penalty area. A server is on the wing with the ball.
On a signal, the player makes a diagonal run behind an imaginary defensive line.
Server plays a through ball timed to the run.
Player receives and finishes first time if possible.
10 reps from the right side; 10 reps from the left side.
Track first-time finishes vs. extra-touch finishes.
Goal
Success is arriving at the far post at the exact moment the through ball gets there, not half a step early needing to check back, not late getting caught offside.
Helpful cues
- Run across the defender's path, not straight at the ball
- Time your run so you arrive as the ball arrives
- Check your shoulder before making the run, see where the ball is going
