How it works
Sprint into a diagonal receiving position in response to a ball movement cue, simulating a diagonal run off a striker.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
Your focus
Diagonal runs behind the defensive line create goals. Players must learn to time the run , this drill ingrains the trigger: when the ball moves, you move.
Set a cone in front of you and two cones 10 yards away at 45-degree angles (diagonal channels).
When your coach or parent rolls the ball sideways, sprint into the nearest diagonal channel.
Receive the ball (or imagine receiving it) in the channel.
Walk back and reset. Do 5 reps left diagonal, 5 reps right diagonal.
Your run should begin the moment the ball starts moving.
Goal
You've nailed it when your run is triggered by the ball movement, not by a separate signal or your own decision.
Helpful cues
- Watch the ball, move the instant it moves
- Diagonal angle, not straight
- Arrive in stride, don't stop and wait
