How it works

Compete in a high-intensity small-sided format with reduced rest to develop match-specific aerobic endurance and recovery.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball
  • scrimmage vests
  • goals

Your focus

Small-sided games at high intensity with minimal rest are the gold standard for soccer-specific endurance training. They train all energy systems simultaneously while maintaining technical and tactical demands , the closest training equivalent to the physical demands of a real match.

1

4v4 on a 20x15 yard field. Goals at each end.

2

Games last 3 minutes at maximum intensity.

3

Teams rotate with 60 seconds rest after each game.

4

Each team plays 5 consecutive games.

5

Coach tracks goals scored per game, does quality drop in games 4 and 5?

6

Team with most goals across all 5 games wins; players self-rate their endurance.

Goal

Success is still defending and pressing at the same intensity in the last 5 minutes as you did in the first 5. The reduced rest should be invisible in your play.

Helpful cues

  • You should be breathing hard after the first minute, that's right
  • Recovery in 60 seconds: slow breath, wet your throat, reset mentally
  • Technical quality in games 4 and 5 tells you where your fitness limit is
