How it works
Mirror an attacker's movement without committing to a tackle, practicing the defensive stance and staying on feet.
What you need
- cones
- soccer ball
Your focus
Young defenders tend to dive in immediately and get beaten. Shadow defending teaches patient footwork, proper defensive stance, and the habit of staying on feet , the foundation of all sound defending at any level.
Pairs face each other in a 10x5 yard lane.
Attacker dribbles slowly side to side; defender must mirror the movement staying 1-2 yards away.
Defender must stay between the attacker and the goal (a cone at the end of the lane).
Attacker cannot score unless they get past the defender.
Run for 30 seconds per round; switch roles.
Complete 4 rounds each.
Goal
You've got it when you stay on your feet the whole rep, no diving in, no losing balance. If you're still between the attacker and goal at the end, that's a win.
Helpful cues
- Stay on your toes, flat feet get beaten
- Don't lunge, wait for the moment
- Keep your eyes on the ball, not the attacker's body
