Your focus
Tackle timing is one of the most difficult skills in defending , too early loses it, too late allows a shot. Repetitive 1v1 practice where the tackle is the goal builds the perceptual skill to recognize the right moment and execute cleanly.
Set up a 12x8 yard corridor. Mini goal at each end.
Attacker starts with ball; defender starts 2 yards away.
Attacker tries to score; defender must jockey first (no immediate tackle) for 2 seconds.
After 2 seconds, defender can attempt to win the ball.
Award points for clean tackles (ball stays in play and defender controls it).
10 rounds each; debrief best tackle techniques.
Goal
It's clicking when your tackle wins the ball clean and your opponent doesn't get a shot off, timing beats effort here. One clean tackle per rep is the benchmark.
Helpful cues
- Wait for the heavy touch, that's your window
- Block tackle: foot firm, weight forward into the ball
- After the tackle, get your head up immediately
