Your focus
Recognizing and exploiting a numbers-up situation is a core soccer IQ skill. This drill trains players to see the overload, make the right decision immediately, and convert the advantage into a goal , the essence of attacking decision-making.
Set up in the attacking half: 3 attackers vs. 2 defenders + goalkeeper.
Play starts with coach feeding ball to the middle attacker from the halfway line.
Attackers must score in 8 seconds or fewer.
Award extra points for goals scored with 3 or fewer total touches across the attack.
After each sequence, coach gives one decision feedback point to one player.
Run 15 sequences; rotate positions.
Goal
It's working when you use the extra player to create a clean scoring chance, not just playing it forward and hoping. If you had three and scored easily, you read it right.
Helpful cues
- You have the numbers, use them fast before the defenders recover
- Ball to the open player, not the easy player
- Shoot when you're in range, passing when you should shoot is a bad decision
