How it works

Strike long clearances with power and directional accuracy to target zones on the halfway line.

What you need

  • cones
  • soccer ball

Your focus

A clearance that goes out of bounds or back to the opponent is not a clearance , it's a turnover. Training directional accuracy alongside power develops the complete clearing skill needed at higher levels of competition.

1

Place target zones (3x3 yard cone squares) on the halfway line, one left, one center, one right.

2

Balls are placed at the edge of the penalty area.

3

Player approaches at match speed and strikes the ball toward a called target zone.

4

Coach calls the zone just before the player strikes.

5

Award 3 points for hitting the target, 1 for clearing the halfway line.

6

15 attempts per player; track highest score.

Goal

You're there when the ball lands in the target zone consistently, at least 4 out of 6 clearances hit the mark under full pressure.

Helpful cues

  • Lock your ankle, a floppy foot loses power and direction
  • Non-kicking shoulder points at target
  • Strike through the center of the ball for height and distance

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Player chooses their own target zone before striking.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Balls are rolled to the player, they must clear on the half-volley.
