Your focus

Defenders must clear under pressure with opponents closing. Replicating this in training conditions the player to make quick, decisive clearances without hesitation , a key habit that prevents defensive errors.

1

Set up in the penalty area with a goalkeeper in goal.

2

Coach crosses balls from the left and right flanks alternately.

3

One defender and one attacker compete for each ball.

4

Defender must clear the ball out of the penalty area before the attacker can shoot.

5

Track successful clearances vs. shots allowed over 10 balls per pairing.

6

Rotate defenders and attackers after 10 balls.

Goal

It's working when you clear the ball before the attacker reaches you, if they're still two steps away when the ball leaves, that's the benchmark.

Helpful cues

  • Call 'keeper' or 'away' early so your GK knows your intent
  • Clear to the side, not back across goal
  • First instinct is the right instinct, commit
