How it works
Strengthen mindset by declaring and performing consistent with a personal player identity statement.
What you need
- lacrosse stick
- lacrosse ball
- goal
- cones
Your focus
Identity-based behavior is more durable than goal-based behavior. Players who define who they ARE as athletes perform more consistently than those who only think about what they want to achieve. Identity statements anchor behavior during adversity.
Each player writes a 1-sentence identity statement: 'I am the player who ______.'
Players share their statement with a partner.
During the next scrimmage, partner observes specifically for behaviors that align with the identity statement.
Post-scrimmage: partner shares one moment where they saw the identity statement play out.
Helpful cues
- Your identity statement should scare you a little, it should be who you're becoming, not who you already are
- When pressure comes, your identity is what guides you if your technique fails
- A team of players who know who they are is one of the hardest things to beat
