How it works

Apply a complete adversity mindset framework (recognize, reframe, respond) during a designed high-adversity scrimmage.

What you need

  • cones

Your focus

Elite-level mindset is a trained skill, not a personality trait. A three-step adversity framework (recognize the challenge, reframe it as opportunity, respond with action) gives advanced players a repeatable process that functions under maximum competitive stress.

1

Run a scrimmage with stacked adversity: losing by 3, key player sits out, shot clock shortened.

2

At each stoppage, any player can call a 'mindset moment', 30 seconds where the team names the adversity, reframes it, and assigns a response.

3

The response must be a specific action, not a feeling (e.g., 'Press harder on the clearing unit' not 'feel better').

4

Run two 10-minute adversity scrimmages and compare team mindset and performance quality between them.

Helpful cues

  • Recognize it: name the specific adversity out loud, don't ignore it
  • Reframe it: what opportunity does this create?
  • Respond: one specific action, immediately, right now

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach facilitates the mindset moments; team just provides input.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Players run the mindset moments without coach input while the clock is running.
