React and Redirect

Agility & Change of Direction

Legend

How it works

React to a coach's visual signal and accelerate in the called direction while protecting the ball.

What you need

  • lacrosse stick
  • lacrosse ball
  • cones
  • resistance bands

Your focus

Reactive agility , responding to an external stimulus , transfers more directly to game performance than pre-planned drills. Combining reaction with stick protection simulates being approached by a defender mid-dodge.

1

Player stands at center cone in ready position with ball cradled.

2

A parent or partner stands 5 yards away and points left, right, forward, or backward.

3

Player immediately drives hard for 5 yards in the pointed direction.

4

After 5 yards, player returns to center and resets. Repeat 10 signals.

Goal

You're there when you're already accelerating in the new direction before the signal fully registers, the response feels instant, not delayed by a thought.

Helpful cues

  • First step must be explosive, don't hesitate
  • Protect the ball on the side away from the direction signal
  • Return to athletic stance quickly after each rep

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use verbal cues ('left,' 'right') instead of visual signals.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a live defender who reacts to the same signal and tries to reach the destination cone first.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
