How it works
Develop power application in game-specific skating by performing explosive power surge starts from the defensive zone to the neutral zone under chase pressure.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
Power in hockey is only valuable when it can be applied in game-specific movement patterns under competitive pressure. Training explosive breakout surges builds the skating power expression that creates actual positional advantages in transition play. Players who can surge powerfully in the breakout are harder to forecheck and create faster, more dangerous offensive transitions.
Player begins with puck in the defensive zone; a forechecker starts 5 strides behind.
On the whistle, the player must surge powerfully through the neutral zone using maximum explosive strides to create a 5-stride lead by the far blue line.
Player shoots on net; forechecker must be left behind by power and speed.
Run 8 reps; coach evaluates power stride quality against the forechecker distance created.
Goal
You've got it when your surge in the drill reaches noticeably higher speed than your normal stride, you can feel the difference.
Helpful cues
- Power surge means your first 5 strides are all at maximum force, not warm-up strides
- Drive your arms as hard as your legs, arm drive multiplies leg power
- The puck carry must not slow your surge, if it does, practice them separately first
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Remove the forechecker for the first 5 reps, focus on the surge mechanics before adding the competitive race.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a second forechecker who activates from the opposite side, requiring a more powerful surge and directional change to create the lead.No account needed
