How it works
Build explosive lateral power through repeated aggressive edge pushes between two cone points simulating defensive lateral movements.
What you need
- hockey stick
- ice
- cones
Your focus
Lateral power , the ability to explosively push off one edge to the opposite side , is the most specific strength expression in hockey skating. Developing this power builds the defensive lateral speed and the offensive crossover power that determine edge duels. Players with stronger lateral edge pushes win 50-50 foot races to pucks and battle positions at boards.
Set up two cones 8 feet apart.
Player positions between cones and explosively pushes off one edge to reach the opposite cone, immediately pushing back.
Each push is at maximum explosive effort, not a glide, a drive.
Complete 10 double-pushes per set; 3 sets with 45-second rests.
Goal
Success is making each lateral push feel like an explosion, you cover the full distance between cones in two hard pushes, not five soft ones.
Helpful cues
- Drive from the whole blade, toe through heel on the push
- Land on the inside edge of the receiving foot and immediately push back
- Low and wide, your power position is not upright, it is athletic
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce the distance to 5 feet and allow a 1-count before each push.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Increase distance to 12 feet and add a puck to carry through every lateral push, combining power with puck control. No account needed
