How it works

Develop explosive starts and precision edge work by combining quick-start technique with targeted edge drills at competition speed.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

Elite skating requires both the ability to explode from a standing start and to transition between edges with precision at high speed. Training these together , starts leading directly into edge work , develops the complete skating skill set that separates elite players from good athletes on skates. Players who combine explosive starts with precise edges can escape any forechecking pressure and attack any gap.

1

Player starts from a dead stop at the goal line and drives 3 explosive strides toward the blue line.

2

At the blue line, player transitions into a tight 180-degree edge turn around a cone.

3

Player immediately accelerates back to the goal line with 3 explosive strides.

4

Run 8 reps; coach evaluates first-step power and edge quality on the turn.

Goal

You've got it when your explosive starts feel like you're launched forward, not stepping and hoping, but driving with real force.

Helpful cues

  • First stride is your widest and hardest, commit the weight forward
  • The turn is an edge, not a glide, stay on the inside edge through the full 180
  • Explode out of the turn, the turn ends in acceleration

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce to a 90-degree turn to decrease edge demand before building to 180.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a puck carry through the entire drill, explosive start, tight turn, and acceleration all with puck control.
