How it works

Develop the ability to receive a pass in stride and release a wrist shot quickly on a live goalie.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • net
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Receiving a pass and shooting quickly , without settling the puck , is the most common scoring scenario in hockey. Learning to redirect a pass directly into a shot requires both hand-eye coordination and the confidence to shoot without stopping the puck first. Players who can shoot off a pass without an extra touch become dangerous in game situations where a fraction of a second determines whether the shot gets off.

1

Partner stands at the boards and passes to the shooter in the mid-slot.

2

Shooter receives the pass and releases a wrist shot within 1 second, no extra stickhandling.

3

Goalie plays live; shooter must pick a spot before receiving the pass.

4

Run 10 reps; switch roles.

Goal

You're there when you take the pass without stopping your feet and release the shot while you're still moving, one smooth motion.

Helpful cues

  • Your target is chosen before the puck arrives
  • Soft hands receive the pass, immediately redirect to shooting motion
  • One touch, one release, do not cradle and then shoot

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow up to 2 touches to receive and shoot before reducing to 1 touch.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a stick check from behind just as the pass arrives, shooting under distraction pressure.
