Your focus
Passing while skating is significantly harder than stationary passing because the player must control body movement, blade angle, and timing simultaneously. Developing this coordination at a basic level builds the skill that is required on every rush, breakout, and cross-ice play in competitive hockey. Pairs who practice skating passes develop the timing and communication that underpins all team play.
Two players skate side by side from the goal line to the far blue line.
They pass the puck back and forth 4 times while skating, 2 forehand, 2 backhand.
At the blue line, the player with the puck takes a shot on net.
Return to the goal line and repeat; switch starting possession each time.
Goal
You're there when your partner catches the pass in full stride, no breaking step, no reaching back, just catches and goes.
Helpful cues
- Lead your partner, pass ahead of them, not at them
- Soft hands receiving, cushion the puck on arrival
- Call for the puck if you are open, communication makes the pass easier
