How it works

Develop elite sustained effort by running a scrimmage with a strict never-stop-skating rule, continuous movement required from every player for the entire segment.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Effort at the elite level is defined by what players do when they do not have the puck , off-puck skating, repositioning, supporting, backchecking. The never-stop rule forces players to maintain hockey-relevant skating when they would normally drift or coast, exposing the effort gaps that cost teams in the final minutes of games. Practicing full-shift effort in a scrimmage context builds the conditioning and discipline to sustain it in games.

1

Announce the rule: any player who stops skating for more than 2 seconds unless in a board battle is immediately pulled for a 30-second rest.

2

Run a 5-on-5 scrimmage for 5 minutes.

3

Coach monitors off-puck players for coasting; any violation is immediately called.

4

After the scrimmage, identify the 3 players with the most violations and the 3 with the fewest, celebrate the latter.

Goal

You've got it when there's never a moment in the scrimmage where you're gliding while play is happening, constant movement.

Helpful cues

  • If you do not have the puck, you are supporting the play, skate toward something
  • Off-puck skating wins games, not highlights
  • When you are tired is when the rule matters most, that is also when teams give up goals

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow 4 seconds before calling the violation, building the habit before demanding elite standards.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a team consequence for every violation, making individual effort a team accountability issue.
