Your focus
Hockey shifts demand sustained effort across multiple high-intensity moments , a sprint, a battle, a backcheck , not just one explosive event. Training players to maintain effort level across a sequence of competitive demands builds shift-long conditioning and the mental discipline to be effective from the beginning to the end of every shift. Players with high sustained effort have a compounding advantage across the full game.
45-second simulated shift: 15-second full-ice ball race, then 15-second board battle for possession, then 15-second scoring attempt or defensive stand.
Player goes from one element directly to the next with no rest.
Coach evaluates effort at each stage: was it 100% throughout or did it drop?
Run 3 full shifts per player with 90-second rests between.
Helpful cues
- Your third stage must be as fast as your first
- Effort is not just at the start, it is in every part of the shift
- How you end the shift is how your team remembers you
