How it works

Build competitive drive and effort around the net by training players to aggressively pursue rebounds with immediate second-effort scoring attempts.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Competitive drive is most visible in the dirty areas , players who go hard to the net for a rebound demonstrate maximum competitive effort where it matters most. Scoring on rebounds requires both physical effort and competitive drive. Training this habit creates natural net-front competitors who extend plays rather than watching missed shots.

1

Player shoots from the top of the circles on the goalie.

2

On every shot, player immediately drives hard to the net for a potential rebound.

3

Goalie intentionally creates a rebound on every other shot.

4

Player competes against a defender who tries to eliminate them from the rebound; score 3 rebounds to win the drill.

Goal

You're there when you crash the net on every rebound, even after a save you can't predict, and come out with the puck at least half the time.

Helpful cues

  • Assume every shot will rebound, drive every time
  • Your feet decide rebounding, get there first
  • Competitive drive means you go to the net even when you are tired

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Remove the defender for the first 5 reps, focus on the habit of driving before adding competition.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add two defenders who both compete for the rebound, requiring higher effort and physicality to score.
