How it works

Develop competitive drive and sustained effort by running a scrimmage where extra points are awarded for high-effort plays.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

A scoring system that explicitly rewards effort , backchecks, board battles won, blocked shots , teaches players to value competitive actions beyond goals and assists. When competitive drive is rewarded as directly as scoring, players develop the intrinsic motivation to give maximum effort in all situations. This mirrors the way competitive teams are evaluated by coaches.

1

Run a standard small-area game 4-on-4.

2

Points are awarded: 1 point per goal, 1 point for a completed backcheck that prevents a shot, 1 point for winning a board battle.

3

Coach monitors and awards effort points in real time with a whistle signal.

4

Track both goal points and effort points; celebrate the highest combined scorer.

Helpful cues

  • A backcheck point is worth as much as a goal point today
  • Competitive drive shows in what you do WITHOUT the puck
  • Every play is worth something if you are competing at 100%

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Track only goals and backchecks, simpler effort recognition system.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a deduction: a player who coasts on an effort play loses a point, holding everyone accountable to competitive standards.
