How it works

Build coordinated edge control and body awareness by navigating a multi-element obstacle course on ice.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • cones
  • ice

Your focus

Coordinated body control on edges requires linking multiple movement patterns , crossovers, pivots, tight turns , without losing balance or puck control. An obstacle course format challenges players to apply edge skills in a varied sequence, building the neural connections between different coordinated movements. This develops the all-around body control that enables complex skating maneuvers in game situations.

1

Set up a course: slalom cones, a tight figure-8 around two cones, a backward skating section, and a pivot gate.

2

Player carries a puck through all elements of the course.

3

Coach times each run; players aim to complete the course clean before pursuing speed.

4

Run 4 timed reps per player.

Goal

You're there when you navigate the full obstacle course without touching any markers and your edges feel predictable under your feet.

Helpful cues

  • Lean into turns, do not fight them
  • Let your edges do the work, trust the blade
  • Stay compact through tight sections, do not over-reach

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Skate the course without a puck to master the movement patterns first.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a defender who follows 3 seconds behind, turning the course into an evasion drill.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
