How it works

Develop high-pressure composure by running a team shootout where the outcome affects the entire team's post-practice conditioning.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

When individual performance affects teammates, the emotional stakes and pressure increase dramatically , mirroring game playoff shootout situations. Learning to stay technically precise and calm under this type of elevated collective pressure is a critical elite performance skill. Players who practice under consequence-stakes composure situations perform better in actual game shootouts.

1

Team is informed: if the majority makes their shootout attempt, practice ends on time; if not, 5 extra conditioning minutes are added.

2

Players take one shootout attempt each; coach applies verbal pressure (countdown, announces the score).

3

Players must follow a pre-agreed routine: stick tap, breath, pick a side, go.

4

Debrief on what composure felt like and what technical errors crept in due to pressure.

Goal

Success is executing your move cleanly on the shootout even knowing your team is watching, your body does what it's trained to do.

Helpful cues

  • The routine is your anchor, go through it no matter what you feel
  • Pressure is just information, it doesn't control you
  • Your feet and hands know the skill; let them do it
