How it works

Train elite composure under overtime game conditions by running a sustained 3-on-3 OT scenario with coach-applied psychological pressure.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice
  • goalie

Your focus

Overtime hockey demands composure at its absolute peak , one mistake ends the game for the entire team. Players who have practiced composure specifically in overtime-simulated conditions enter those moments with a framework for staying calm. The ability to execute technical skills without hesitation while emotionally charged is the definition of elite composure.

1

Set up 3-on-3 overtime on half ice; coach announces this is 'game 7 overtime.'

2

Coach applies pressure verbally throughout the drill: announces near-misses dramatically, calls out player names when they have the ball to simulate crowd attention.

3

Players must use a pre-agreed pre-shift routine (3 breaths, positive self-talk phrase, physical cue like stick tap).

4

After each 90-second OT segment, each player rates their composure 1-5 and states what broke it.

Helpful cues

  • Composure is a skill, it has to be practiced like a wrist shot
  • If you feel panic, slow your feet for one second and reset
  • The routine doesn't guarantee the goal, it guarantees your best chance at one

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Run OT simulation without coach verbal pressure first, just the game format

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Coach randomly blows a whistle to call a penalty mid-sequence, adding a new composure challenge within the existing pressure scenario
