How it works

Build a process-focused mindset by scoring a flag football practice game on process goals rather than touchdowns.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Outcome-only scoring creates fixed mindset anxiety around results rather than growth mindset focus on performance processes. Teaching players to define and pursue process goals shifts their mental energy to what they can control on every play. Athletes with process mindsets perform better under pressure because they focus on execution rather than scoreboard outcomes.

1

Each player sets one personal process goal before the scrimmage (e.g., eyes on the ball through the catch, sharp break on every route, maintain athletic stance on defense).

2

Run a 10-play scrimmage; after each play, each player self-rates whether they met their process goal on that rep (yes or no).

3

Total process goal success rate is the team score for the session.

4

Debrief: how did focusing on your process goal affect your performance?

Helpful cues

  • You control the process, not the outcome
  • Rate yourself on your goal, not on the scoreboard
  • A yes on your process goal is a win, regardless of the play result

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach assigns a process goal to each player rather than having them self-select.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Player must have a game-specific process goal that responds to the defensive look they face each snap.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
