Your focus
Defensive effort in flag football is most visible after a catch. Teaching players that every flag pull opportunity deserves maximum pursuit builds a relentless defensive effort culture. Effort on post-catch pursuit is one of the most impactful defensive habits in flag football.
QB throws a short pass to a receiver; the covering defender did not intercept and must now pursue and pull the flag.
Defenders sprint at 100% to chase the carrier from 5 yards behind after the catch.
Any successful flag pull in a pursuit situation earns 2 team effort points; any visual jogging earns 0.
Run 12 catch-and-chase reps; track effort points and celebrate full-effort pulls regardless of success.
Goal
Success is pulling the flag even after the reception, not giving up because the catch already happened.
Helpful cues
- The play is not over when they catch it
- Full speed until the flag is pulled or they score
