How it works
Improve reaction time and first-step athleticism by responding to a dropped ball with a sprint and catch.
What you need
- football
Your focus
Reaction time is a key athletic differentiator in flag football, where reading the snap and ball flight requires split-second responses. Chasing a dropped ball at an unpredictable angle trains the nervous system to initiate movement without hesitation. This drill builds the athletic quickness needed for receivers running short routes and defenders closing on the ball.
Player stands 3 yards from the coach in athletic ready position.
Coach holds a football at chest height and drops it without announcing the moment.
Player reacts as fast as possible, sprints forward, and catches the ball before it bounces twice.
Reset and repeat 8 times; vary the drop timing to prevent anticipation.
Goal
Success is catching the dropped ball before it bounces twice, your first step fires before you've consciously decided to move.
Helpful cues
- Stay in your stance, don't lean early
- First step should be immediate, not after you think about it
- Soft hands as you gather the ball at speed
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back

Add the next challenge
