How it works
Develop sustained high-effort output by executing repeated press-and-recover sequences at maximum intensity.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
Sustained high effort across multiple reps builds the physical and mental conditioning needed for full-game pressing. The press-and-recover pattern reflects the actual physical demand of defensive pressing in field hockey. Players who can maintain effort intensity late in games have a significant competitive advantage.
Two players: one presses an attacker 15 yards, attacker passes the ball, defender recovers 15 yards.
New ball introduced; repeat immediately.
Complete 6 consecutive reps without a full rest break.
Record effort quality on rep 6 compared to rep 1; set a standard.
Goal
Success is maintaining genuine press intensity through the final rep, not slowing down because you're tired.
Helpful cues
- Same sprint on rep 6 as rep 1
- Effort in the last rep is the one that counts most
- Recovery sprint is as important as the press sprint
