How it works
Build the habit of giving maximum effort on every repetition through a team relay race.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
Establishing the standard of full effort at a young age creates the work ethic needed for long-term development. Team relay format motivates individual effort for the benefit of the group. Celebrating effort over results teaches the right values from the start.
Teams of 4 line up at a start cone; first player dribbles 15 yards to a turnaround cone and back.
Hand off the ball to the next player.
First team to complete all 4 reps wins, but coach emphasizes full-speed effort on every run.
After the race, ask players: 'Who gave 100% on every run? Hands up.'
Helpful cues
- Full speed means full speed, not almost
- Your team needs your best, not your comfortable
