Your focus
Real games go to extra time in knockout tournaments; players must be mentally and physically prepared to sustain effort. Training deliberately in extra time conditions builds the willpower to not drop intensity. Players who have experienced 'extra time' in training approach it in games with confidence.
Play a 15-minute full-intensity small-sided activity scrimmage.
Regardless of score, play 5 minutes of extra time, mandatory.
Coach monitors and calls out any drop in effort during extra time.
Debrief: what made you want to drop effort and what kept you going?
Helpful cues
- Extra time is where winners are made
- Your body has more than you think, your mind is the limit
- Full effort for the full 20 minutes, no exceptions
