How it works

Execute a coordinated defensive press trap to win the ball in the attacking half and immediately counterattack.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • pinnies
  • cones
  • goals

Your focus

High defensive pressure in the opponent's half generates turnovers in dangerous positions. Teams who coordinate their press effectively can generate more scoring chances than those who rely on possession play alone. Training the press trap builds synchronization and defensive aggression.

1

Set up a 5v5 in a 35x25-yard area; defending team uses a coordinated press shape.

2

When the ball goes to a specific trigger zone (e.g., left back), press is activated.

3

Nearest player press, second player cuts the pass, third covers.

4

If ball is won, immediately transition to attack; award 2 points for a goal off a press turnover.

Goal

You're doing it right when the press trap wins the ball in the attacking half and immediately turns into a counter, turnover to chance.

Helpful cues

  • Trigger zone activates the press, everyone moves together
  • Cut the forward pass first
  • Win it here, finish it there
