How it works
Learn the correct technique for a jab tackle to poke the ball away from a dribbling attacker.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
Your focus
The jab tackle is the safest and most fundamental defensive stick technique. It can be applied without overcommitting the defender's body position. Correct jab tackle technique reduces fouls and increases turnover success.
Defender and attacker set up 5 yards apart; attacker dribbles toward defender.
Defender adopts defensive stance (bent knees, stick on ground to the right).
As attacker approaches, defender extends the stick in a controlled jab to the ball.
Complete 10 reps on each side; evaluate stick reach without body lunge.
Goal
You're there when your jab tackle pokes the ball away cleanly, no slap, no foul, the ball leaves the attacker's stick.
Helpful cues
- Jab the ball, not the body
- Extend the stick, don't lunge your whole body
- Stay patient, wait for the ball to be momentarily away from their stick
