How it works

Organize a 3-player defensive unit to defend a 4v3 attacking overload using correct shape and communication.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • cones
  • pinnies
  • goal

Your focus

Defending in a numbers-down situation is one of the most demanding defensive scenarios. Players must organize quickly, maintain shape, and slow down the attack until help arrives. Training this regularly builds defensive intelligence and communication.

1

Three defenders set up in defensive third against 4 attackers; coach starts attack from midfield.

2

Defenders communicate to distribute marking responsibilities and delay the attack.

3

Score as defenders: points for holding the attack for 10 seconds without a shot.

4

Run 10 reps; rotate defenders.

Goal

You've got it when your defensive unit holds shape through the whole 4v3 attack, the shape doesn't collapse early.

Helpful cues

  • Delay, delay, delay, don't commit too early
  • Press the ball; others cover the most dangerous options
  • Talk constantly, silence means chaos
