Your focus
1v1 situations against a goalkeeper are among the highest-pressure moments in field hockey. Composure determines whether the player panics and rushes or stays calm and places the ball. High-repetition practice against a live goalkeeper desensitizes players to the pressure.
Set up 4 starting positions around the circle edge; goalkeeper in goal.
Player receives a pass, controls, and has 4 seconds to execute a 1v1 finish.
Before receiving each pass, player completes a reset breath.
Run 20 attempts across all 4 positions; review decision-making on each.
Goal
Success is taking your shot with smooth technique at the right moment, not rushing because of the goalkeeper or the clock.
Helpful cues
- See the goalkeeper, pick a side, go there
- Soft hands in the approach, be smooth
- The calm player scores more than the fast player
