How it works
Teach young players that attitude and effort are choices by rewarding positive behaviors with visible tokens.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- cones
- jar or container
- tokens
Your focus
Young athletes develop attitude through positive reinforcement and clear expectations. Making effort tangible with a jar and tokens helps children connect their behavior to outcomes. Group celebration when the jar fills builds team culture around positive attitude.
Place a jar on the boundary; explain that every time a player shows great attitude (encouraging a teammate, trying again after a mistake, listening well), they earn a token.
Run a simple moving with the ball relay race with cones.
Coach awards tokens publicly for specific attitude behaviors observed during the drill.
When the jar fills, celebrate with a team activity of the players' choice.
