How it works

Develop lower-body power through bounding then immediately transition to receiving and distributing a pass.

What you need

  • field hockey stick
  • field hockey ball

Your focus

Bounding builds explosive power in the legs, critical for acceleration in field hockey. Transitioning to a skill task after power work trains the body to perform technically under physical fatigue. This mirrors game situations where a player sprints to a pass and must control it cleanly.

1

Mark a 15-yard bounding lane; partner waits at the end with a ball.

2

Player performs 5 alternating-leg bounds down the lane.

3

Immediately upon landing the last bound, partner passes the ball to the player.

4

Player receives, controls, and passes back; repeat for 5 sets.

Goal

You've got it when your power bound covers maximum distance and you control the receive cleanly right after landing, no stumble, no miss.

Helpful cues

  • Drive your knee up on each bound
  • Stick your landing before receiving
  • Soft hands when receiving, cushion the ball

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Replace bounds with long strides.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Increase to 10 bounds and receive a driven pass at pace.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
