Your focus
Elite transition players make the 90-foot sprint while making decisions about the pass and the finish , all at maximum speed. This drill trains the combination of athleticism and skill execution at game speed in a way that live scrimmage cannot isolate. Players who consistently hit the 6-second target change the momentum of games with their speed.
Player starts at one baseline. A parent or partner passes a ball off the backboard to simulate a rebound.
Player outlets to themselves (or to a designated outlet passer) and sprints full court.
Receive the return pass near half-court and attack the basket for a layup.
Clock starts on outlet; clock stops at layup contact with the board. Target: under 6 seconds.
Goal
You're there when the full outlet-receive-sprint-finish sequence happens in under 6 seconds, time it. That's the real benchmark.
Helpful cues
- Catch the outlet on the run, no standing and waiting
- Attack the basket at full speed, don't slow down to set up the layup
- Six seconds from rebound to finish, that's elite transition speed
