How it works

Build dribbling speed and control by pushing the ball ahead and running at maximum velocity full court.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • full court

Your focus

Players who dribble the ball in front of them rather than beside them can push it out and run faster in transition. Full-court speed dribbling builds the coordination to control the ball at maximum running speed , a critical skill in transition offense. Push-dribbling in practice translates directly to more fast-break layups in games.

1

Player starts at baseline. On 'Go,' player pushes ball 2–3 feet ahead and sprints to catch it, repeating this 'push and run' pattern.

2

The ball should always be 2–3 feet ahead, not beside the body like in a standard dribble.

3

Finish with a layup at full speed. Turn and sprint back immediately.

4

Complete 8 full-court trips. Track time from baseline to layup.

Goal

It's working when the ball stays out in front of you the full length of the court, you're running to it, not slowing down to control it.

Helpful cues

  • Push it ahead and run to it, like you're chasing your own ball
  • Eyes up even when the ball is ahead of you
  • Finish without slowing down, attack the layup at full speed
