How it works

- basketball

- shot clock or stopwatch
Your focus
Shot-clock pressure is the number-one cause of poor shot selection at competitive levels. Players who panic as the clock winds down take increasingly bad shots. Training shot selection under actual clock pressure , with real consequences , builds the ability to find a quality shot efficiently or create one under pressure.
Set shot clock at 14 seconds (mimicking a secondary break possession). Run 5v5 half-court.
Offensive team must take a shot before 14 seconds expire or they lose possession, but a bad shot still counts as a turnover.
Coach grades every possession: Was the shot taken within time? Was it quality? Both required for a score.
Run 15 possessions. Track shot quality rate and shot-clock violation rate.
Goal
You're there when your team generates a quality shot on every shot-clock possession, not a heave at the buzzer, but a real attempt created in time.
Helpful cues
- 14 seconds is plenty of time for 3 quality passes and a shot
- Shot clock pressure is not an excuse for a bad shot
- Move faster with the ball to create more time for the right shot
