How it works

Develop basketball leadership by having a player draw up, teach, and lead the team through a designed offensive possession.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • whiteboard

Your focus

The highest form of basketball leadership involves understanding the game deeply enough to teach it. Player-coached possessions force leaders to articulate strategy, earn buy-in from teammates, and execute their vision. Programs that develop player-leaders have an enormous competitive advantage because leadership doesn't disappear when the coach isn't watching.

1

Assign one player as coach for the possession. They draw up a play on the whiteboard.

2

Player-coach explains the play to all 5 teammates, assigning roles and answering questions.

3

Team executes the play in a live possession against 5 defenders.

4

Debrief: Was the play clear? Did the player-coach handle questions with confidence? Would you want to run it again?

Helpful cues

  • If you can't teach it, you don't know it well enough yet
  • Leadership in the huddle is leadership on the floor
  • Your teammates are trusting your vision, own it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Player-coach selects from a list of pre-drawn plays rather than creating one.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Player-coach must adjust the play on the fly when the defense takes away the primary option.
