How it works
Develop on-ball defensive footwork by staying in front of an attacking dribbler through multiple direction changes.
What you need
- basketball
- cones
- full court
Your focus
Defending the dribbler is the most fundamental 1v1 defensive skill. Staying in front of a skilled ball handler requires precise footwork, low stance, and anticipation. Players who master this skill become lockdown defenders who can single-handedly change the outcome of games.
Set cones in zigzag pattern from baseline to half-court, 8 feet apart.
Offense dribbles in the zigzag pattern; defense slides and mirrors, staying in front the entire length.
Defender cannot reach, hack, or allow the dribbler to get past their hip.
Switch offense and defense at half-court. Complete 5 full trips.
Goal
You're there when the ball handler can't turn the corner on you through all the zig-zags, you stayed in front, not reacting late, but anticipating.
Helpful cues
- Stay between the dribbler and the basket at all times
- Mirror their waist, not the ball, ball fakes don't work on the waist
- Give ground willingly, never let them get past your hip
