How it works

Teach young players the fundamental defensive stance: low, wide, and active with hands up.

What you need

  • basketball

Your focus

Every defensive principle builds on a correct stance. Young players who learn the right defensive position early develop the balance and quickness needed for all advanced defensive skills. A wide base and low center of gravity are the non-negotiable foundation of effective defense at every level.

1

Players stand in a line. Coach demonstrates: feet wider than shoulder width, knees bent, back flat, hands out.

2

Coach calls 'Stance!', players drop into position and hold for 5 seconds. Coach checks each player.

3

Practice sliding left and right in stance while maintaining position, 5 slides each direction.

4

'Stance race': who can hold perfect stance longest? Last player holding correct form wins.

Goal

You've got it when you hold the stance for 10 seconds without your knees straightening or your hands dropping, low, wide, and active the whole time.

Helpful cues

  • Low is fast, get your butt down!
  • Hands out like you're stopping traffic
  • Don't cross your feet, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle
