How it works

Execute a precise help-and-recover rotation as a unit when the ball handler beats their defender off the dribble.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • full court

Your focus

Team defense requires every player to help when a teammate gets beaten, then recover when the ball is kicked out. Teams that execute help-and-recover rotations limit dribble penetration to 0-point plays. This is the difference between a team that plays defense and a team that wins with defense.

1

Run 4v4 half-court. On coach's signal, ball handler attacks and beats their defender.

2

The help defender must step up and take the charge or force a kick-out immediately.

3

On the kick-out, the helper must recover to their original assignment while the beaten defender sprints to the open player.

4

Evaluate each rep: Was help given? Was recovery on time? Did anyone give up a wide open shot?

Goal

It's clicking when the help defender stops the ball and the original defender recovers back to their assignment before the next pass, seamless rotation, no gaps left open.

Helpful cues

  • Help is not optional, it's the commitment of being a teammate
  • Two feet in the charge circle before they arrive, that's help
  • Help and recover means both things happen, not one or the other

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Ball handler stops and passes rather than attacking the helper.

Add the next challenge
