Ball Handling

How it works

Maintain dribble control and change of pace in extremely tight spaces that mimic defensive pressure.

What you need

  • basketball
  • cones
  • stopwatch

Your focus

Defenders at higher levels take away space, forcing ball handlers to operate in very tight windows. Navigating a dense cone maze at speed builds the instinctive control needed in traffic. Players who complete this drill confidently handle press defense and trap situations.

1

Set 12 cones in a 10x10 foot grid with 2 feet between each cone.

2

Player must dribble through every cone without hitting any, using any move necessary.

3

Coach times each run. First run establishes baseline; subsequent runs must beat it.

4

Complete 6 runs per session, alternating dominant and weak hand leading.

Goal

You're there when you can navigate the maze without losing the dribble or bumping a cone, tight control at the pace of the narrowest gate.

Helpful cues

  • Read the space before you enter it
  • Short, quick dribbles in tight, protect the ball
  • Change speeds to find gaps, not just change direction

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Expand cone spacing to 3 feet.
